If you’ve overindulged a little over the festive season, don’t worry, here’s our post-Christmas, top ten detox tips to help you to get back on track with your fit for fertility regime.
1. In the case of a preconception or a pre-fertility treatment detox, remember that it’s important that a detox is started at least six months prior to when you are hoping to conceive or beginning fertility treatment.
2. Eat whole foods, including at least 5-7 portions of vegetables and fruit, and healthy fats such as olive oil. Remember to juice wherever possible.
3. Avoid sweets, fast food, additives, preservatives and artificial sweeteners. Also, avoid alcohol, sugar and white flour products, wherever possible replace them with nutrient-packed whole grains.
4. Try to buy, eat and drink organic produce.
5. Avoid hydrogenated fats – also called trans fats – found in biscuits, pies, pastry, cakes, fried foods, hard margarines, and takeaways, all of which are the types of foods to limit when trying to choose a healthy, balanced diet.
6. Increase the amount of fibre in your diet as this aids the removal of toxins from the body. Increase the amount of pulses, brown wild rice, ground flax seeds and legumes as these are all packed with fibre!
7. Cut right down on red meat and try to consume organic meat such as chicken and dairy produce wherever possible.
8. Pay some attention to the largest organ in the human body, your skin! Dry skin brushing helps to improve circulation, stimulates lymphatic drainage and firms the skin. The improvement in circulation is thought to improve brain function and give you more energy. By improving lymphatic flow, dry skin brushing can also help prevent the formation of cellulite. Dry brushing also removes old dead skin cells and the toxic debris within them, while initiating the development of new skin cells.
9. Drink plenty of fluids (aim for at least eight glasses of filtered water, not fizzy, each day). At the start of the day try a mug of hot water with lemon juice from half a lemon in it, as this helps to alkalise the body.
10. Don’t forget to exercise! Try to take a brisk walk each day for at least 20 minutes as this stimulates the lymphatic system and aids in the removal of toxins from the body.
